Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember those who have given their lives so that we might enjoy the freedoms that so many of us take for granted. Many of you are no doubt looking forward to that three day weekend. Plan some family time! These simple suggestions are aimed at helping you plan to enjoy Memorial Day with family and firends.

Memorial Day is fast approaching. Many of you are no doubt looking forward to that three day weekend but before you carve up all your time with fixing the rain spout and mowing the lawn and washing the curtains and whatever else can honestly wait until tomorrow, plan some family time! These simple suggestions are aimed at helping you plan to enjoy Memorial Day with family and firends.

VFW performing a graveyard service in Memory of our veteransFirst and foremost, remember our veterans.

Show your patriotism. Plan to attend a parade in your local community or a grave side service by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). At right is a picture of such a service. At the end of the service - and unfortuantely out of the picture here - there was a 21 gun salute to their fallen comrades.

Visit Pearl Harbor

Many lives were lost at Pearl Harbor. If you have the chance to visit Pearl Harbor over Memorial Day weekend, the USS Arizona, the USS Missouri and the USS Bowfin Submarine are all open. Memorial Day is Military Appreciation Day at the Pacific Aviation Museum in Ford Island, Hawaii.

Grab your oven mits ...

but leave the oven off. Turn on the gril and enjoy a bbq with your family and friends. It is the perfect weekend to cook up some hotdogs and hamburgers. Fresh seasonal fruit makes the perfect dessert.

As American as baseball and apple pie.

Take in a baseball game.

Explore history.

Go visit a National Landmark, Park or Monument. America is full of Hidden Gems, each filled with its own unique historical story to tell. How fitting it is then that May is National Preservation Month.

Get physical!

What a perfect weekend to get physical. Most community pools open over Memorial Day weekend. Grab your towels and the kids and have a splash. Grab a frisbee and head to the park with your puppy. Go for a run.

Benefit runs

Many organizations sponsor benefit runs for various charities over the Memorial Day weekend. In Huntsville, Alabama runners take to the road to benefit the Huntsville Police Fallen Officers Memorial Fund. The Boys Town National Research Hospital Memorial Day Run is held over the weekend in Boys Town, Nebraska.

Take in a concert.

Many communities have outdoor concerts in celebration of Memorial Day. In Washington DC, for example, PBS is sponsoring a free concert at the Concert Sunday evening with Trace Adkins billed as one of the performers.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday. Banks will be closed. Public transportation may or may not have a holiday schedule. Check with your local transportation provider to confirm schedules. Most importantly - thank a veteran.
